Shangri-La — Time Travel Will Tell

Before you start

Required

4 players. On original BO1, the four Quick Revive-area buttons have to be activated simultaneously, so the main quest cannot be completed with fewer than four players.

You'll want:
  • Power turned on
  • 31-79 JGb215 / Baby Gun
  • Pack-a-Punched Baby Gun / Fractalizer later
  • Spikemores — ideally 4
  • Explosives
  • A way of dealing with Napalm Zombies
  • Juggernog strongly recommended
  • A crawler or otherwise controlled zombie whenever possible

The Baby Gun comes from the Mystery Box, so get it early. You don't need it for every step, but you don't want to reach the later stages and then spend 20 rounds hunting for it.

The golden rule

If you aren't sure whether a step worked, look/listen for the transition back to the normal timeline and Brock/Gary's dialogue.
Each successful stage generally gives you confirmation before you move on.

STEP 1 — Turn on the power

First, open enough of the map to make movement easy.

  1. Leave spawn.
  2. Work your way toward the Power Room.
  3. Turn on the power.
  4. Make sure both power switches in the Power Room are activated.

You don't technically need every door open, but opening most/all of the map now makes the Easter Egg dramatically easier.

Then return to spawn.

STEP 2 — Enter Eclipse Mode

This is the mechanic you'll be using repeatedly.

Near Quick Revive in the starting room are four circular buttons, one on each side/corner of the structure.

Put:
  • Player 1 → button 1
  • Player 2 → button 2
  • Player 3 → button 3
  • Player 4 → button 4

Everyone presses their button at exactly the same time.

The map shifts into the past:

🌑 Eclipse Mode

You'll see the eclipse overhead and the environment changes.

Important - Most Easter Egg steps need to be completed during this Eclipse.

When you finish a step, the game normally returns you to the present. If you run out of time or screw up the step, you'll have to activate the Eclipse again.

The Eclipse window is roughly five minutes, so don't waste time wandering around.

STEP 3 — The 24 Stone Tiles

This is the first real puzzle.

Start it

While in Eclipse Mode:
  1. Go to the area near the MPL wall-buy.
  2. Look for the large stone structure/statue.
  3. Find the button beneath/near the statue.
  4. Activate it.

You'll hear Brock and Gary talking.

Then the floor tiles appear.

What you're looking for

There are 24 stone plates:
  • 12 on one side
  • 12 on the other side

Each plate has a symbol engraved on it.

There are 12 matching pairs.

How to solve it

This is basically a giant memory game.

Have two players work together.

For example:

Player 1: steps on a tile.

It lights up and shows:

Player 1 tells Player 2:

"Triangle."

Player 1 steps off.

Player 2 searches the other group of tiles for the matching triangle.

Once Player 2 finds it:

Both players stand on the matching tiles simultaneously.

If they're correct:

Both tiles disappear into the floor.

Then repeat.

Important rule - If you accidentally match two incorrect symbols, the entire puzzle resets.

Also, don't leave someone standing on a tile while you're trying to identify its counterpart; the symbols can change/reset depending on how you approach the puzzle.

Symbols

You'll encounter things resembling:
  • Circle
  • Circle with dot
  • Triangle
  • Diamond
  • Crescent
  • Star/asterisk
  • Female symbol
  • D-shaped symbol
  • Three dots
  • Various intersecting-line symbols

You don't need to memorize the names—just communicate visually.

Completion

Once all 12 pairs have disappeared, you'll hear Brock/Gary.

A Focusing Crystal appears.

That's your confirmation that the step is done.

STEP 4 — The Water Slide

Activate another Eclipse.

Now you're going to free Brock and Gary.

Position the players

Go to the water slide.

You need:

  • 3 players at the bottom
  • 1 player at the top

The three players at the bottom stand on/around the metal grate.

The fourth player gets into the water slide.

The trick

The player going down the slide needs to hit a small switch protruding from the side of the slide.

Hold the interact button while going down so you can activate it as you pass.

The other three players don't move.

If done correctly:

The switch gets hit → the explorers react → the step completes.

The game returns from Eclipse.

This is one of those steps where positioning matters much more than firepower.

STEP 5 — The Falling Crystal

This is where the Baby Gun becomes necessary.

Activate another Eclipse.

Go to the top of the water slide.

Look above the slide toward the cliff/rock wall.

You'll see a large crystal/orb embedded/perched above the slide.

Knock it down

Use an explosive:
  • Frag grenade
  • Semtex
  • Ray Gun
  • China Lake
  • etc.

Shoot/throw the explosive at the crystal.

The objective is simply to knock it down.

Shrink it

Now pull out:

31-79 JGb215

Shoot the crystal.

It shrinks.

Push it

Walk up to the tiny crystal and melee it.

You need to push it into the water slide.

Then follow it.

It travels down the slide and eventually reaches the geyser.

Position yourself around the geyser.

The geyser launches the crystal upward toward its next position.

Confirmation

The crystal ends up positioned on the structure near the geyser.

This is the prerequisite for the gas section.

STEP 6 — Gas Valve

This is one of the trickier sections because you need to control a Napalm Zombie.

Activate Eclipse.

Go into the tunnel near the MPL area.

You'll find a large red gas valve.

Turn the valve

Interact with the valve repeatedly.

The valve needs to be turned four times.

This causes the gas system to activate and the gas leaks to start.

Now the important part:

Don't kill the Napalm Zombie.

STEP 7 — The Napalm Zombie

You need a Napalm Zombie alive.

Ideally:
  • One player controls the Napalm
  • Other players keep normal zombies away
  • Nobody accidentally kills the Napalm

The Napalm Zombie has a huge explosion radius, so keep your distance.

Lead it through the gas

You need to guide the Napalm Zombie through the tunnel containing the gas leaks.

As it passes the leaks, its flames ignite them.

Your goal is to get the Napalm Zombie to pass through all four gas leaks.

You'll see the gas pipes/leaks ignite.

Don't kill it!

This is the part that causes many failed attempts.

You're not trying to kill the Napalm.

You're using its fire to ignite the gas.

Once all four gas leaks are burning, return to the valve.

There's a lever beside the valve.

Pull it.

If everything was done correctly:

The gas mechanism stops and the Eclipse ends.

If you run out of Eclipse time, or the Napalm dies before igniting all four leaks, you'll need to repeat the sequence.

STEP 8 — Plug the Four Holes

This is where your Spikemores come in.

Activate Eclipse.

Go to the tunnel near the wooden bridge/waterfall.

You'll find four holes in the wall.

Three have blue lights associated with them, while one is less obvious.

Place the Spikemores

Put a Spikemore directly in front of each hole.

You need four.

Then lure zombies into them.

When the zombie triggers the Spikemore:

💥

The explosion plugs/seals the corresponding hole.

Repeat for all four.

Tip

Don't place all four and immediately run away.

Make sure each Spikemore actually gets triggered in the correct position.

Once all four holes have been plugged:

Go to the bottom of the waterfall.

Find the interactive brick on the large central rock.

Interact with it.

You'll hear the explorers and the Eclipse will end.

STEP 9 — The 12 Wall Symbols

This is an easy step to miss because it isn't immediately obvious what you're supposed to do.

Activate Eclipse.

Around Shangri-La are 12 stone panels/slabs with symbols.

These are different from the floor tiles from Step 3.

You need to knife all 12.

How to do it

Run around the map systematically.

Whenever you find one:

Knife it.

You'll hear/see the activation.

Continue until all 12 have been activated.

Good strategy

Have players divide the map into zones.

For example:
  • Player 1 → spawn/minecart area
  • Player 2 → mud room
  • Player 3 → waterfall/bridge
  • Player 4 → power/temple side

This prevents everyone from searching the same area.

Once all 12 are activated, the step progresses.

STEP 10 — Destroy the Tiki / Snare

After the wall slabs are activated, you'll need to destroy the relevant tiki/snare object.

Use an explosive weapon.

The goal is to destroy the object that is blocking the progression.

Once destroyed, you can move on to the dial puzzle.

STEP 11 — The Four Mud Room Dials

This is another puzzle where communication helps.

Activate Eclipse.

Go to the Mud Room.

You'll find four rotating dials/wheels.

You need to set them to the correct positions based on the code provided through the map's radio/audio clue.

The code is:
16 — 1 — 3 — 4

The four wheels correspond to those numbers.

Set:
  • Wheel 1 → 16
  • Wheel 2 → 1
  • Wheel 3 → 3
  • Wheel 4 → 4

Once they're correctly aligned, the mechanism activates.

Important

Don't just spin randomly.

Each wheel has a specific number of positions, and you need to count the rotations carefully.

If you overshoot:

Keep rotating until you return to the desired number.

When all four are correct, you'll get confirmation and can proceed.

STEP 12 — The Four Correct Gongs

This is probably the most confusing part for a first-time player.

Activate Eclipse.

There are eight gongs around the map.

You need to find the four correct gongs.

How it works

Go around the map and melee a gong.

You'll hear a response.

Some gongs produce the wrong response.

Some are correct.

You're essentially testing them.

Don't assume it's random

The important thing is to keep track of which ones you've tested.

You need the correct combination of four.

When you hit the correct gongs, the crystal/energy mechanism responds.

Practical strategy

Have one player call them out:

"Gong 1 — wrong."
"Gong 2 — correct."
"Gong 3 — wrong." etc

This prevents four players from repeatedly hitting the same ones.

STEP 13 — Get the Dynamite

Now you'll need the Dynamite.

This is one of the reasons the later section can be frustrating.

You need to get access to the Dynamite through the Pack-a-Punch area.

Before doing this

Make sure you have:

Baby Gun → Pack-a-Punch it → Fractalizer

You'll need the upgraded version for the final crystal sequence.

STEP 14 — Pack-a-Punch the Baby Gun

You need:

31-79 JGb215 → Fractalizer

Get to the Pack-a-Punch machine.

Pack-a-Punch the Baby Gun.

You'll now have the:

Fractalizer

Don't lose it.

This is the weapon you'll use to shrink the final meteor/crystal.

STEP 15 — Shrink the Meteor

This is the big finale.

Activate Eclipse.

Look toward the large Element 115 meteor above the temple/Pack-a-Punch area.

The earlier steps have prepared this object.

Use the Fractalizer on the meteor/crystal.

The meteor shrinks.

You then need to follow the quest's final sequence to get it into position.

The crystal/meteor responds to the energy created by the correct gongs.

STEP 16 — Blow Open the Wall

Take the Dynamite to the required location.

Use it on the blocked wall/entrance.

💥

The wall opens.

Behind it is what you've been working toward:
The Focusing Stone

STEP 17 — Give Brock & Gary the Dynamite

This is the final story interaction.

Take the Dynamite to Brock and Gary.

Interact with the appropriate location.

The explorers finally escape their situation.

You'll get the final dialogue/cutscene.

Then:

🟡 PICK UP THE FOCUSING STONE

That's the actual Easter Egg completion.

🎉 Time Travel Will Tell complete.

The Focusing Stone is also important to the broader BO1 story and is one of the items carried into the Moon Easter Egg progression.
